SCHUBERT: Piano Trio in E-flat, Op. 100, Sonata in
B-flat
The Atlantis Ensemble - Wildboar WLBR 9704:
Both of these magnificent piano trios have been Schubert's most
important chamber works ever since their composition. They are cast in
four fairly long
movements and are brimful of glorious melodies. I came to them in l975
via Stanley
Kubrick's extensive use of the second movement of Opus 100 in his film
Barry
Lyndon. This extraordinary movement almost seems to be telling a narrative
story with its
sad mood and slowly walking rhythm. It was based on a folksong titled See
the Sun
Sinking. The album I then purchased also had Opus 99, which I found equally
lovely. It
possesses a genial Scherzo movement which is as upbeat as the Andante of
the E-flat is
downbeat. I've compared this recent small label release to a couple of
major label
versions. All employ a fortepiano instead of a modern piano, but the Atlantis
trio plays with
an infectious verve that holds my interest best. And the excellent recording
bears lots of
L-R ambience which decades more effectively for surround sound with my
processor than
the other versions.
