David Munrow blazed like a bottle-rocket across the Early Music scene of the 1970s. His career lasted an all-too-brief 9 years (he died in 1976), but in that time he managed to take the stodgy, academic pursuit of historically informed performance, turn it on its head and shake all the stuffing out of it. In a quick succession of influential LPs which included "Music of the Crusades," "The Art of Courtly Love," "Music of the Netherlands," (an important 3-LP set that has been re-issued in various forms on CD), Munrow demonstrated that this music could be passionate, compelling, humorous, sexy, and above all, beautiful.
Music of the Gothic Era was his last recording and probably the most influential of them all. The best available musicians were used, some of whom (Nigel North, Christopher Hogwood, James Bowman, Rogers Covey-Crump, for example) are to this day important figures in Early Music. The recording stands as a template for our present view of Medieval music, but its influence goes even beyond that: Munrow gave the music a universal appeal that lifted it out of academia and permanently into our concert halls.
The sound quality of this digitally re-mastered collection is especially praiseworthy even though the digital engineers received no mention in the booklet.
